SAN NARCISO, Zambales โ The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) took the helm in a coastal cleanup effort this morning along the Barangay Natividad coastline, aligned with the theme of this year’s Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo): “Pamana ng Karagatan: Para sa Kinabukasan, Ating Ingatan,” Sept. 20, 2024.
The PMMA-Department of Research, Development, and Extension (DRDE) led employees and members of the Corps of Midshipmen who joined forces with barangay officials, health workers, and tanods of Barangay Natividad to collect garbage and debris along the coastline.
In a video message in observance of MANA Mo 2024, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. encouraged the youth to participate in such activities and emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Philippines’ vast maritime resources.
“This yearโs celebration of MANA Mo is a clarion call to raise greater consciousness on maritime and archipelagic concerns, as well as to engage our people in protecting our maritime interest and resources from various threats,” President Marcos said.
As a leading maritime institution, PMMA recognizes the importance of collective action in preserving the seas for future generations.
Celebrated every September, MANA Mo serves as a reminder of the Philippines’ unique identity as a maritime and archipelagic nation. With more than 7,000 islands and 14,000 coastal communities, the country’s well-being is inseparably linked to the health of its oceans.
The month-long observance aims to raise awareness about the various maritime threats facing the country and inspire Filipinos to take an active role in protecting their maritime heritage.
