PMMA-DRDE conducts Mangrove Planting Activity together with the community as part of celebrating the MANA Mo 2023

On September 29, 2023, the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy through the Department of Research, Development and Extension concluded the celebration of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) 2023 by conducting the Mangrove Planting Activity held at the PMMA Complex/Sitio Aldea, San Narciso, Zambales. Since the PMMA is in the Barangay Natividad and near the coastal area, the mangrove planting activity involved the residents of the community.
 
The activity was also attended by DENR-CENRO officers and staff headed by Mr. Jowell P. Dellosa, CENRO Officer, Olongapo City, LGU Barangay Natividad headed by Capt. Aproniano L. Balaba Jr., Prof. Ronald D. Barro, D. Eng., Assistant Superintendent for ATRE, Tactical Officers and Corps of Midshipmen.
 
1000 mangroves were planted which can help prevent storm surges and they play a vital part in our tropical and subtropical ecosystem. This promotes the development of environmentally friendly activities, establish and develop local capacity to protect the environment. Planting mangrove trees also offers watersheds and ideal habitats for marine resources, such as coral reefs and various fish species.
 
If there are no mangroves, then the sea will have no meaning. It’s like a tree with no roots, for the mangroves are the roots of the sea!โ€ ~ Mad-Ha Ranwasii
