In its mission to advance research in the maritime sector, the ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ฒ (๐๐๐๐), through the ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก, ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐๐๐๐), led by ๐๐๐ซ ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐๐, successfully conducted its stakeholder consultation relative to the research agenda setting for the years 2025 to 2027 with the theme “Innovation to Excellence: Navigating Maritime Education and Training through Groundbreaking Research, Development and Extension Activities,” which took place at the National Headquarters of the Philippine Coast Guard, Port Area Manila, on Friday, November 15.
The event, which brought together stakeholders including representatives from government agencies such as the Maritime Industry Authority and Philippine Coast Guard, academic institutions, maritime organizations, and manning/crewing agencies, aimed to achieve key objectives, such as collecting valuable inputs regarding additional topics that may improve the future of maritime research studies; reviewing and refining topics from the current research agenda; identifying new and emerging areas of interest; and encouraging collaboration to strengthen ties.
The event commenced with Cdr Paraggua presenting the comprehensive research agenda, encompassing a broad range of topics including the development of the maritime industry, enhancing maritime security and law enforcement, advancing maritime education and training, fostering institutional development, promoting community development, and empowering women in the maritime industry.
During the course of the open forum, key participants shared insightful ideas and proposed topics essential for enhancing maritime education. Among the key takeaways were the emphasis on the significance of the blue economy as a foundational concept for revising maritime institution curricula, the integration of E-Navigation into fleet management and operations, the urgent need for maritime decarbonization, exploring the field of maritime law and maritime law education, and a comprehensive study on the economics of the maritime industry.
In her concluding remarks, Cdr Paraggua lauded the stakeholdersโ commitment to fostering sustainability, innovation, and the welfare and development of Filipino seafarers. She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all the participants for their invaluable presence and active engagement throughout the discussions.
Furthermore, Cdr Paraggua also hopes to have collaborative research endeavors with the stakeholders. โLet us have collaborative researchโ she stated, emphasizing the importance of working together to achieve broader goals. โWe can work together para mas marami tayong ma-coverโ she added.
Through fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, the PMMA DRDE seeks to establish a framework that not only meets the needs of the current landscape but also anticipates future advancements, addressing various undefined challenges and seize opportunities within the realm of research and development.
